As the male buck gets older, he becomes more active during the night(nocturnal), and less likely to mate. Thus, making the big bucks harder to catch.

Whitetail deer hunting during the rut (the periodic sexual excitement of certain mammals), is when you would be more likely to come across the young bucks. As they are still very interested in breeding. The deer, as well as the forest at this time, are very active, and you can experience this kind of liveliness at anytime during the day.
Weather conditons play a big role in deer activity. A storm, or warmer than average temperatures during deer hunting season can definitely minimize deer activity, and a strong wind seems to easily frighten them. Perhaps it's because their senses are confused during these times, making it harder for them to travel safely and avoid predators.
Sometimes you can catch deer out feeding before a big storm, as they seem to have a built in barometer that lets them predict the weather before it hits.
The moon is also known to affect deer movement and activity, but not alot is known about this subject. Some research has been done, and articles have been written about moon phases and positioning, and how it affects them.
The oceans' tides are affected by the moon, and through past research it's safe to say that deer, and many other animals are affected as well.
